In March, 2007, Menu Foods recalled all of its canned pet
foods containing "chunks and gravy" because they were linked with
cases of acute kidney failure and death in some research
cats. Wheat gluten purchased from China appeared to be
contaminated with one or more toxins. There is still no
definitive answer as to what is causing the problem ... aminopterin
(a rat poison) or melamine (used to make plastic dishware) or some
other yet unidentified contaminant. The list of foods
containing potentially contaminated wheat gluten has grown to
include Hill's Prescription Diet m/d dry food as well as Del
Monte's Jerky Treats, Gravy Train Beef Sticks, and Pounce Meaty
Morsels.
We continue to advise cat owners to:
a) Have an exam for any sick cat, regardless of what food they
eat
b) Stop feeding any recalled product immediately
c) Keep a record of lot numbers or dates on any of the recalled
food that they still have, especially if they plan to return it for
credit
d) Freeze a small amount of canned food or kibble if possible, in
case further analysis is needed
e) Contact the manufacturer for further information.
See the FDA website for a complete list of recalled foods and
continuing updates.
